Mahila Mahavidyalaya was founded in 1929 by Bharat Ratan Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya as an idea to promote women’s education during british rule. Mahamana strongly believed in the strong role of educated women for a developed country and thus the concept of Women’s college was born. The establishment of a separate women’s college was announced by Mahamana in his convocation address on 14 december,1929. Mahila Mahavidyalaya offers undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral courses in various subjects to women.

Mahila Mahavidyalaya stands indifferent in providing excellent academic environment. Well known professors and scholars contribute their best in order to maintain the college’s academic record. Quoting Mahamana’s own words “ it is my earnest hope and prayer, this centre of life and light which is coming into exsisting, will produce students who will not only be intellectually equal to the best of their fellow students in other parts of the world , but will also live a noble life, love the country and be loyal to the supreme ruler”.

Mahila Mahavidyalaya (MMV) an integral part of Banaras Hindu University, and a premier institution of higher education for girls was established in 1929 by the visionary educationist Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya ji. This institution sprawling over a lush green campus of 1300 acres imparts undergraduate education in 36 subjects in 6 faculties. In addition, Post graduate courses are available in Education, Home-Science and Bio-informatics. Mahila Mahavidyalaya in keeping with Mahamana’s vision endeavors to develop in the students, the ability to think creatively, articulate their thoughts with confidence and act with conviction. Alongside an atmosphere of rigorous academic standards, MMV provides the students with a vibrant environment conducive to developing all facets of their personality. The students thus are able to complement their academic life with active engagement in a variety of co-curricular activities both at the College and University level. Since its inception our students have not only won accolades at the University level in academic accomplishments but have also represented the University in cultural, literary and sport activities. MMV draws its students not only from all over India, but all over the world as well. Thus studying here is an enriching experience which exposes the students to wide cultural diversity. We want that the years spent in the college should be meaningful in terms of academic acumen, skill enhancement and personality enrichment. In the words of our founder Mahamana Malaviya Ji , "A teaching university would but half perform its function if it does not seek to develop the heart power of its scholars with the same solicitude with which it would develop their brain power." It is this vision of Mahamana which is the corner stone of education at MMV and we hope that this institution will help our students’ blossom into empowered as well as sensitive human beings.
